Problem

How does a graphite/epoxy composite behave when a ball indenter strikes it at low velocity, and what effect does plastic strain have?

Method

  • Surveyed the literature on impact behaviour of composites.
  • Set the model considerations and the mathematical formulation.
  • Applied boundary conditions and solved for the degrees of freedom.
  • Defined the graphite/epoxy material properties and the effect of plastic strain.
  • Worked numerical examples and analysed composite strain.
  • Examined the effect of the indenter after the low-velocity impact.
